lake bolsenaThe holiday accommodation is on the shores of Lake Bolsena which is in Northern Latium on the borders with Tuscany and Umbria and on the Via Cassia mid-way between Siena and Rome. The area, known as the Alta Tuscia, is one of the loveliest parts of central Italy. The place is of great natural beauty (wooded hills and open country, olive groves and vineyards) as well as of historical importance (Etruscan tombs, Roman remains, medieval hilltop villages and Renaissance palaces). Lake Bolsena is the fifth largest in lake Italy and the biggest of volcanic origin, with an area of 114 sq. Km, a maximum depth of 160 m. and it lies 305 m. above sea level. In summer the average temperature of the water is between 20- 25 C°. Its waters are limpid and abound in fish. The shores are sandy and covered in luxuriant vegetation. There are two beautiful islands, the Bisentina and the Martana. Guided tours are organised for the Bisentina island. Lake Bolsena is on two sign-posted walking routes: one is the Via Francigena- the well-known medieval pilgrim road which runs from Canterbury to Rome, and the other is a newly- opened route called the " Sentiero dei Briganti",created by the local Tourist Board to take in the most significant areas of natural beauty and historical interest, and funded by the European Union and the Regione Lazio. The Brigands' Path follows the Tuscan-Latium border for about 90 kms from the Nature Reserve of Monte Rufeno to the medieval castle and Etruscan museum of Vulci (Canino). It passes through splendid countryside and archeological sites and ends with views of the Tyrrenian sea. Besides these major routes there are also many shorter walks and trails to places of interest around the lake. Bolsena is a good centre for sightseeing trips further afield. Rome is 120 kms, Siena 100kms, Florence 200 kms, Orvieto 35 kms. Viterbo, Tuscania, Tarquinia are about 40 minute's drive away. Notable is the town of Viterbo with its thermal baths of the Bagnaccio and Bullicame. Thanks to the natural high temperature of the water (37°C) it is possible to bathe there even in mid winter.
